• “Seam sealed”, “fully sealed” or “taped seams” — without them, water gets in through the stitching.
• What it says it’s for — “light showers” is a water-resistant jacket, whatever the headline says.

• An adjustable hood that moves with your head and stays up in wind.
• Length. Hip-length is lighter and easier to move in; a long raincoat keeps your legs drier on a walk to work.
• Breathability if you’ll be walking hard — otherwise you get wet from sweat on the inside.
• Room to layer. In Australian weather, a light shell over a fleece usually covers more days than one heavy insulated coat.
• Packable if it lives in a bag until the weather turns.
