Best Swimming Goggles & Speedo Size Guide

The short answer: the best goggles are the ones that seal on your face — fit comes before features. Then pick the lens for the light you swim in: clear for indoor and low light, smoke or mirrored for bright pools and sunny days, polarised for glare off open water.

Speedo’s test: without the strap, gently hold the goggles to your eyes. If you feel a brief suction, they’re a good fit. A well-fitting pair gives a slight suction and a comfortable, even pressure all around the eye.

The two areas to focus on are the eye socket and the bridge of your nose. Some goggles have adjustable or interchangeable nose bridges; others use softer materials that mould to your face.

To put them on, hold the lenses snug to your eye sockets with one hand, pull the strap into place with the other, then re-adjust the lenses if you need to.

The Fastskin Pure Focus listing describes it for racing and training. It and the Aquapulse Pro mention Speedo’s IQfit design, which Speedo says it built from global head-scanning data.

Speedo designs its women’s goggles for the smaller contours of female faces, and its kids’ goggles around infant and junior face shapes.

Goggles fog when warm air meets the colder lens. Speedo builds anti-fog into all its goggles, as a coating or within the lens — but rubbing the inside of the lenses wipes it off, and older goggles fog more. Speedo’s care tips:

• Keep them in a case or pouch so they don’t get scratched in your bag.
• Rinse in lukewarm water after swimming. No soap or detergent — it can damage the anti-fog coating.
• Don’t touch or rub the lenses.
• Lay them flat to air-dry — never leave them wet in your kit bag.
• Keep them out of the sun when you’re not wearing them.

Speedo swimwear sold in Australia is labelled in a few different ways, and the size is at the end of each product name:

• Women’s swimsuits use Australian dress sizes — for example the Endurance+ Medalist in size 10, 12 or 14.
• Men’s jammers, aquashorts and briefs use numbered sizes such as 32, 34 and 36; watershorts use S–XXL.
• Kids’ swimwear is sized by age, such as 9–10 years.

Speedo’s method: use a soft tape over bare skin or close-fitting underwear, flush against the body without digging in. Measure twice and use the larger number.

• Bust: the fullest part of your chest, tape level across your back, arms relaxed.
• Waist: the narrowest point of your natural waist, usually an inch or two above your belly button. Breathe normally.
• Hips: the fullest part of your hips and seat, feet together.
• Chest (men and boys): the fullest part, under the armpits, tape level across the shoulder blades.

How tight depends on how you swim, Speedo says: a recreational suit fits closer than normal clothes but lets you move freely; a training suit is snug and firm when dry; racing suits are deliberately tight.

For regular pool swimming, look for chlorine resistance — the Endurance+ listings below describe chlorine-resistant fabric.

Speedo’s routine: rinse in cold, clean water as soon as you’re out of the pool or sea; hand wash in cool water (machine washing breaks down Lycra); press the water out rather than wringing; dry flat in the shade; and never tumble dry, iron or store it damp. If you swim a lot, rotate two suits so each can recover its shape.

Check the fit first — hold them to your eyes without the strap and feel for suction. If they don’t seal, try adjusting or swapping the nose bridge, or a different style.

Warm air meeting a cold lens. The anti-fog coating stops it, but rubbing the inside of the lens or washing with soap wears it away.

Polarised for open water glare; smoke or mirrored for a sunny outdoor pool. Speedo doesn’t recommend smoke lenses for murky open water.

A training suit should feel firm when dry — it eases slightly in the water. It’s too small if it leaves deep marks or rides up when you lift your arms.
