Denim, Decoded: How to Find Your Perfect Fit
Skinny, straight, slim, relaxed, wide — denim fits are a language of their own. This guide translates the cuts so you can find the jean that actually suits you.

Denim is the hardest-working piece in most wardrobes and the easiest to get wrong. The secret is not the brand — it is the cut and the rise. Get those right and almost any jean looks considered.

Understand the rise first
Rise — where the waistband sits — shapes an outfit more than the leg does. High-rise lengthens the leg and tucks tops cleanly; mid-rise is the flexible all-rounder; low-rise reads more relaxed and casual.
The main leg cuts
| Straight | The universal cut — clean line from hip to hem, works on most builds |
|---|---|
| Slim | Tapered but not tight — a tidy option under blazers and boots |
| Relaxed / Loose | Room through the thigh, easy and current — balance with a fitted top |
| Wide / Barrel | Fashion-forward volume — best with a tucked top and a heel or chunky shoe |
Fabric matters
Rigid 100% cotton denim holds its shape and ages beautifully but has no give on day one. A little elastane (1–2%) adds comfort and recovery. More than that and jeans can bag out through the day.
Buy for the waist, tailor the length. A $15 hem on a jean that fits your waist beats sizing up for length every time.
