Transitional dressing is all about removable layers that still look intentional when you take them off. These five formulas travel from a crisp morning to a mild afternoon.

1. The overshirt over a tee
A heavyweight overshirt (or "shacket") worn open over a plain tee is the easiest transitional move there is. Warm enough for morning, casual enough to knot around the waist later.
2. Knit over a collar
A fine-gauge crewneck with a shirt collar and cuffs peeking out reads polished with almost no effort. Swap to a roll-neck underneath as it gets colder.
3. The unlined blazer
An unstructured, unlined blazer bridges smart and casual and packs down when the sun comes out. Over a tee and straight jeans it is a complete look.
4. Trench weather
A lightweight trench or car coat is the classic shoulder-season layer — rain-ready, easy to carry, and it dresses up everything underneath.
5. Vest as the middle layer
A quilted or knit vest adds core warmth without sleeves getting in the way — ideal over a long-sleeve tee or shirt when you want movement.
The rule of transitional layers: each layer should look right on its own, so you can shed one and still have an outfit.
